Someone You Should Know: Kristen Savage
Kristen Savage helps clients understand their insurance coverage -- before it’s too late.
As Risk Management Advisor for individual property and casualty insurance at The Bensman Group, Kristen works with existing clients to review their property and liability insurance to make sure that the coverage they have still provides the protection they need.
“A lot of people haven’t looked at their insurance coverage in a long time,” she says. “They might not understand exactly what it covers and what it doesn’t.” In addition, changes in their lives might have created the need for different kinds of coverage.
Kristen also works with new clients, sitting down with them, going over their current insurance and developing a plan for coverage. “Sometimes people have been with the same company for a long time before they come to Bensman,” she said. “The coverage they have might have been fine when they bought it, but it might not be appropriate now.”
Taking an in-depth look at their coverage can be an eye-opening experience for the client, Savage says. But she enjoys helping clients understand how best to protect themselves and their property. “My favorite part of the job is educating people about what kind of insurance they have and what’s available,” she says.
Sometimes clients think they have coverage for things they don’t, Kristen says. For example, many people don’t realize that homeowner’s insurance does not cover most flooding that occurs when water from outside comes into your house, such as through cracks in the floor or foundation, or through windows or doors. It is Kristen’s job to make sure that clients find that out before they open their basement door to see their furniture floating in 4 feet of water.
Or clients might not have updated their homeowner’s and liability insurance to reflect changes in their lives such as improvements to their home or the fact that they now have a young driver in the house.
Kristen helps clients make decisions about how to get the coverage they need. For example, she might suggest that a client increase their deductible in order to free up some money for coverage they need in another area.
“I tell people, part of my job is to help you spend your premium dollars wisely,” she says.
One of the things she likes best about her job is the opportunity to meet clients and get to know them, she says. Having strong relationships with clients is central to the philosophy of The Bensman Group, and Kristen is an important part of that process.
“I’m the person they talk to if they buy a new house or a new car or a vacation home,” she says. “I get to help them understand and deal with a lot of the big things that are going on in their lives.”
Kristen has been with Bensman for four years, and she has been in the insurance business for 18 years. A graduate of Michigan State University, she is also the mom to 7-year-old and 12-year old sons.
