Someone You Should Know: Kelly Wagner
Kelly Wagner took a slightly unusual route to her position as Senior Client Manager, Individual Insurance for The Bensman Group. After graduating from Bradley University with a bachelor’s degree in business management and a concentration in entrepreneurship, she spent two years in the Peace Corps, working in the eastern Caribbean teaching math, reading and art to schoolchildren.
“It was a wonderful experience,” she said. “I learned to be a better listener, and I learned a lot about how to explain things to people. These are skills I use every day in helping clients.”
Kelly joined Bensman in June 2014, working with the Employee Benefits Department on the transition to a new database management system. In 2015, she joined the Individual Insurance Department, becoming Senior Client Manager in 2016.
“I work with clients, and I work with all of our carriers,” Kelly said. “I am an interface between the insurance company and the policy owner.”
Most clients she works with already have decided to purchase life insurance coverage. Kelly said that her goal is to help those clients understand all the ways in which their life insurance can work to help them meet their goals.
“You want to explain to people that life insurance exists so that the people they love will be protected if something happens to them,” she said. “You want to tell them that things are going to be OK.”
She emphasizes to clients that life insurance should evolve as life evolves. Many people first buy life insurance when they get married or have their first child. But as their life changes – perhaps they have more children or change jobs or ultimately retire – their insurance should reflect those changes.
“If your main goal in buying life insurance is to provide for the people you love and your situation changes, we should take a new look at your coverage,” she said.
She also explains all the ways in which life insurance can be an important part of a total financial picture. It obviously is a critical part of estate planning for individuals, but it can help protect the future of a life’s work as well.
“Trusts, key person policies and similar measures can be put into place to make sure that a business or other enterprise continues to run smoothly, in the way the insured intended, if something tragic happens,” she said.
The goal of all life insurance is to protect a person’s goals, hopes and dreams for the people and entities that matter most to them. Kelly said her goal is to guide people through that process so that their insurance continues to do that.
“Life flows, things change over time, so it becomes important for us to touch base, to build relationships with clients,” she said. “We don’t want to just sell you something. We want to interact with you and help you understand your changing needs, to make sure that your coverage is still doing what you want it to do.”
