Keep Your Home Safe While You Are Away

Summer time is vacation time for lots of people. Unfortunately, thieves know this, too. If you want to keep your house safe while you are away, follow some common-sense rules.

First, you don’t want your house to look like no one is home. Stop your mail or arrange for a neighbor or friend to collect it regularly. Make sure you do not expect any deliveries while you are gone; if you do, have someone get the package from your porch promptly. And if you still have a newspaper delivered, hold delivery until you get back.

Arrange for your lawn to be mowed – or your walks shoveled, if you go away in the winter. Put some lights on a timer so that it looks like someone is turning on and off lights in the house. Stagger the lights, so that they don’t all come on and go off at the same time. Make sure that your outside lights come on at night and go off in the morning. And if you are going to be gone over garbage collection day, ask a neighbor to take your can to the curb – and put it back.

Leave your curtains like they are when you are home. For example, close the blinds in bedrooms but leave the living room drapes open. Just make sure you move any valuables so that they are not visible from the street.

Burglars know all the hiding places for an extra key, so if you have a hidden key, remove it. Lock every possible entrance to your home; don’t forget about the door onto the screen porch or the upstairs windows. Set your home security system when you leave the house. This can alert the authorities if someone breaks in and, depending on the system, it also can let them know if you have a fire, water leak or other emergency.

Tell the local police that you will be out of town. Ask a close friend or neighbor to stop over a couple of times a week just to make sure everything looks as it should. Tell your neighbors you will be gone, and also tell them if you have a friend who will be dropping by – you don’t want a helpful neighbor to call the police on your helpful friend.

Finally, don’t advertise your upcoming trip on social media. For example, don’t post on Facebook something like: “Leaving in two days for TWO WEEKS at the lake! Can’t wait!” As everyone knows, lots and lots of people can see those posts, and not all of them have your best interests at heart.

Taking sensible precautions makes it much more likely that you will not come back from vacation to find that someone has broken into your home. At The Bensman Group, we want to help keep your home safe and protected, even when you are away. We are always happy to talk with you about your insurance or risk management needs at 847-572-0828 or
