Focus on relationships. Relationships are the most important key to happiness, so this is a good place to start. Relationships give you support, but they also let you support others and therefore reinforce your place in the greater universe of people. You need different kinds of relationships: lovers, friends, siblings, people you work with. Nurture those relationships you have, and work to build new ones.
Seek out happy people. Being around people who are happy tends to make you feel happier, experts say. However, this does not include smiley-face emoticons on a text message or Facebook post. You need to spend actual face time with real people who are positive and happy.
Understand your genetic predisposition. According to research, about 50 percent of happiness is part of your genetic makeup. About 10 to 20 percent is dependent on things like your health and life situation, and the rest is the result of things you choose to do and think. If you seem genetically predisposed to unhappiness, you might have to try a little harder to overcome that.
Start out trying to be happier. No one can be totally happy all the time. Instead, look at ways you can be happier every day. Start by asking yourself what makes you happy, and then try to do more of those things.
Understand the role of money. Basically, the more you have, the less it affects whether you are happy. It is true that money can’t buy happiness. However, a lack of money can contribute to unhappiness.
