College Insurance Questions

If your child is headed off to college, there are a few insurance issues you should take care of first:

  • Let us know your child's address at school, so we can add that address to your policies.

  • Let us know if your child is taking a car to school. If not, and if your child's school is more than 100 miles from home, you probably are eligible for a discount on your auto premium. If your child is taking a car, make it very clear that under no circumstances can he or she lend the car to someone else.

  • Dorm insurance offered through the school is rarely a good idea; your child's property is covered by your homeowner's coverage. It is subject to your deductible, but you can add first-dollar coverage for specific items such as computers and iPads.
