Save on Great Fall Getaways
Summer, when children are out of school, is the busiest travel season in most places. But if you don’t have to work around a school schedule and you can travel in the fall, you usually can enjoy lower costs, as well as smaller crowds and cooler weather. U.S. News & World Report suggests some great sites for a fall getaway:
Paris. The crowds have thinned out considerably, meaning you don’t have to battle other visitors for a look at the Mona Lisa or a seat at an outdoor café. And almost everything from flights to food to hotels costs less than it does during the crazy summer season.
San Francisco. The weather is rarely unbearably hot in the City by the Bay, but it can be exceptionally lovely in the fall. And you can enjoy the wonderful sights and tastes of San Francisco at your leisure.
Chicago. Fall is perhaps the best time to visit the Windy City – after the oppressive heat and humidity of summer and before the snow and cold of winter. And with school in session, there are many fewer visitors to the city’s wonderful museums and other attractions.
Las Vegas. Sin City is much cooler in the fall, making it more pleasant to golf or take a side trip. And the crowds are smaller, so it is easier to find an empty slot machine or a ticket to a popular show. Be sure to check for package deals on airfare and hotels; you might save a bundle.
New York. You can see the fall colors in Central Park, enjoy a Broadway show, go shopping or enjoy world-class dining – all without the crowds that flock to the Big Apple in the summer.
Vancouver. Hotel rates drop considerably in the fall, making it easier to see the International Comedy Festival in September or the International Writers & Readers Festival in October.
Austin. The weather cools off and the nightlife heats up. A highlight is the Austin City Limits Music Festival, held in September.
Boston. The cooler weather is perfect for walking all over this historic city. And you can rent a car and check out New England’s world-famous fall foliage.
Savannah. Another place where the weather is considerably more comfortable than during the summer, Savannah is host to a variety of music festivals in the fall.
Yellowstone. You won’t have to stand in line for a glimpse of a geyser, and you will be less likely to find yourself stuck in traffic. However, check ahead to see what park amenities will be available when you go.
Munich. Okoberfest is Munich’s biggest party. That means that, unlike in most destinations, you won’t find low prices or smaller crowds. But you will find 16 days of great beer, food and festivities.
Disneyland. The weather is cooler, the lines are shorter and there are some impressive deals on airfare and hotels if you choose fall for a visit to Mickey’s original home, in Anaheim.
