When to Buy Expensive Items

The prices on expensive items can vary considerably, based on the time of year. Manufacturers and retailers offer bargains at certain times in order to encourage buyers during slow periods or get rid of inventory left over after sales. According to, these are the best things to buy in each month:

January: Fitness equipment. The new year is often when people decide to get in shape, and retailers offer sales to entice them to act on their resolutions. January and February are also good months to book a cruise, as cruise lines start to offer deals on spring and summer sales. Cruise prices also often dip in October.

February: Cameras. Manufacturers often introduce new models in February, so they offer big discounts over President’s Day weekend on models being phased out.

March: Luggage. As people start to think about summer travel, new luggage styles make their debut – and the older styles go on sale. There also are sales in October because the summer travel season is over and retailers are getting rid of inventory.

April: Cookware. You often can find good prices in April, at the start of graduation and wedding seasons.

May: Mattresses. Memorial Day mattress sales can bring huge savings. But also watch for mattress sales around President’s Day, July 4 and Labor Day.

June: Gym memberships. Nice weather is encouraging people to get their exercise outside, so gyms offer discounts to lure them back inside.

July: Jewelry. Valentine’s Day is over, and it is a long time until Christmas. So stores offer deep discounts to bring people to the jewelry counter.

August: Swimwear. Beach season is almost over, making this a good time to get a good deal on swimwear. Similarly, you can pick up camping equipment for a bargain in August.

September: Cars Most manufacturers release their new models in September, so they want to move last year’s models off the lot. You also can find good prices on computers, because students have gone back to school. And of course, you can get great deals on computers on Black Friday.

October: Bicycles. This is when manufacturers release their new models, meaning the old models are marked down.

November: Electronics. If you don’t mind the crowds, you can get phenomenal deals on computers, televisions and other electronics on Black Friday. Or you can wait until Cyber Monday and surf the Internet for great prices.

December. Wedding dresses. Most people are immersed in the holidays in December, so wedding dress manufacturers and retailers often slash prices to get brides to take a look, even if their wedding is months away.
