Best Places to Start a Business 2008

Maybe you already have started a business, or maybe you are just considering taking the plunge. But either way, probably part of what you are hoping for is the opportunity to have the kind of life you want. That includes living where you want, in a place that minimizes hassles and maximizes the opportunities for fun and personal growth. Fortune Small Business magazine recently released a list of the “Best Place to Live and Launch.” It spotlights U.S. cities that have excellent leisure opportunities, beautiful natural surroundings, and the business climate and technological support needed to run your company.

For example, Iowa City, Iowa, is No. 21 on the list. The University of Iowa offers you opportunities to continue your education, either in your field or in other areas that interest you. The university also contributes to a highly educated workforce in Iowa City, as well as to a community with a large selection of coffee shops, restaurants, lecture and performance venues, etc. And the stat offers incentives to small business owners, including a state tax exemption on overseas sales.

Fortune includes 100 cities on its list, all over the country. The entire list can be viewed here
