Insurance and Your College Graduate

If your child is graduating from college, congratulations to you both! There is a lot to celebrate and plan for at this momentous time, but take a minute to think about how graduating from college can affect your child's insurance needs.

There are many questions to consider before removing your college graduate from the home, auto and umbrella insurance policies. While it may be financially tempting to split them off of your insurance, they may still be considered part of your household, especially if you are still paying most of their day-to-day expenses.

Among the questions to consider are:

  • If your child moved into an apartment, did you co-sign the lease? Are you paying all or part of the rent?

  • Is your name on the title of your child's car?

  • Are they still listed on your health insurance plan?

  • What address shows on your child's driver's license? Voter registration card?

Finally, depending on your graduate's personal situation, he or she might need to consider special coverages such as disability or life insurance. We at The Bensman Group would be happy to sit down with you and/or your graduate and discuss these and any other insurance questions. Just contact us at 847-572-0800 or
