More Join Millionaire Ranks

There are more American millionaires than ever before, and many of them live in California, according a recent study.

TNS Financial Services, a market research firm, says that the number of U.S. millionaires was up for the fourth consecutive year in 2006, when 9.3 million American households had a net worth of at least $1 million, excluding the value of their primary residence. This is up 5 percent from 2004.

Of the top 10 counties with the highest number of millionaire households, four are in California: top-rated Los Angeles County, with 268,136 millionaire households; Orange County (3rd), with 116,157; San Diego County (5th), with 102,138; and Santa Clara County (8th), with 74,824. Chicago's Cook County is Number 2 on the list, with 171,118 millionaire households. Completing the Top 10 list are Maricopa County, Arizona (4th) ; Harris County, Texas (6th); Nassau County, New York (7th); Palm Beach County, Florida (9th); and King County, Washington (10th).
