Affordable Retirement Options Abroad

When people think about retirement, they might think about moving somewhere warmer, with beaches and golf courses, and no snow to shovel. Florida and Arizona come to mind. But what if you wanted to look a little farther afield, to somewhere outside the U.S.? You might even find some bargains

There are issues to retiring abroad: What is your tax situation, both in the U.S. and in your new home country? Is English spoken, or do you need to learn a new language? What about health care? How arduous is the trip if you want to or need to come back to the States?

Anyone considering living abroad in retirement should carefully consider these and other issues. But if the idea intrigues you, here are the 10 most affordable and best places to retire abroad, according to U.S. News and World Report:

1. Algarve, Portugal (pictured). This region has lovely beaches, great golf courses and some of the nicest weather in this part of the world. It also has excellent and affordable health care. And English is commonly spoken.

2. Cascais, Portugal. The cost of living is higher in this coastal city than in Algarve, but the lifestyle is also more luxurious. It is a 40-minute train ride from the center of Lisbon. However, English is not as common as it is in Algarve, and it is unlikely you studied Portuguese in school.

3. Mazatlán, Mexico. Americans have been retiring south of the border for years, and Mazatlán is a popular spot. It has beautiful beaches and an interesting city center. If you don’t want to live there full-time, it can be an excellent place to spend the winter. And you can drive there.

4. Cuenca, Ecuador. A couple can live in comfort here on $1,000 a month. It is a beautiful, interesting and walkable city. Plus, Ecuador uses the U.S. dollar, so you don’t have to get used to a new currency. And there is a large ex-pat retirement community that can help you settle in.

5. Valletta, Malta. An island nation in the Mediterranean Sea, Malta is beautiful and fascinating. It is safe and offers first-world amenities, including excellent health care. And English is spoken virtually everywhere.

6. Occitanie, France. This is French countryside at its best, with vineyards and prices that are a fraction of those in pricier parts of France. Plus, you can have dinner in Spain if you want, and you can be in Paris with a three-hour train ride,

7. San Ignacio, Belize. Here you have Mayan ruins, virgin rainforest, and a large community of foreign retirees to help you feel at home.

8. Annecy, France. Annecy offers something for everyone: skiing, museums, castles, a pristine lake, historical sites, modern amenities – and cheese, which is prominently featured in the local cuisine.

9. Città Sant'Angelo, Italy. This city in the Abruzzo region is one of the best bargains in Europe. If you have dreamed of living like an Italian, this is a great place to do so. But you will need to speak Italian.

10. Georgetown, Malaysia. Georgetown offers modern living as well as plenty of well-preserved history. It is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site and a foodie’s delight. Add to that the beaches and the rainforest, and you have a little something for everyone.
