Call Us If You Plan an Expensive Gift

The holidays are at least partly about giving gifts – the look of wonder in your loved ones’ eyes when they open that very special present you chose especially for them. A gift does not have to be expensive to be special, of course. But if you plan to surprise someone with something that is costly as well as considerate, you should take some precautions, especially if the gift is a surprise.

Say, for example, you purchase an expensive piece of jewelry as a holiday gift. Take a moment to call us before you leave the shop so that we can make sure that your gift is covered under your insurance. Otherwise, if something happens to that gift – if it is stolen or lost or eaten by the dog – you will lose not only the surprise but also the money you spent on the gift.

And while you are at it, consider possible safety and liability issues during the holidays. For example, if you are hosting, be sure to remove snow and ice from your sidewalk, steps, etc. Light your entryway so that people will not trip or fall when they are coming or leaving.

If you use candles during the season, be sure not to place them near drapes or other flammable materials. And extinguish them when you leave the house. Similarly, if you use your fireplace, make sure the fire is completely out before you leave the house or go to bed.

If you entertain, remember that if your guests have too much to drink at your house and then cause injury to people or property, you could be held liable – even if your guests are of legal drinking age. Make sure you have plenty of non-alcoholic beverages available, and don’t let anyone get behind the wheel of a car when they have had too much to drink.

And finally, if you choose to spend the holidays somewhere other than at your home, make sure you take precautions to ensure that your home is safe while you are gone. Stop the mail and newspapers, have someone shovel your walk and driveway, put your lights on a timer, and don’t post information about your trip on social media sites like Facebook.
