Getting in Shape
If you are thinking about joining a gym, December and January can be a good time to do so. Many gyms offer discounted memberships or trial memberships in hopes of luring in people who are resolved to work off that extra holiday turkey and egg nog. So be on the lookout for deals, both from private workout facilities and from the fitness center at your local park district.
And if you do decide to join, exercise some common sense. Make sure you have the right shoes for the activity you are planning to try; don't wear basketball shoes on the treadmill, for example. And don't overdo it right off the bat. That increases the chance that you will get hurt or discouraged and quit. Instead, start slowly and work your way into a fitness routine that you can follow for the long term.
