Protect Against Liability for Identity Theft
By Tim Maurer
You probably have taken action to protect yourself against identity theft by, for example, shredding bills and declining to give out personal information. But if you are a business owner, are you protecting yourself against potential theft of the personal information you have about your customers?
The computer database of virtually every business contains a wide variety of personal information about customers or clients, including credit card numbers, driver’s license numbers, Social Security numbers, health information, etc. You need this information to conduct your business. But you also are creating risk for yourself because if something happens that compromises the security of that information, you as a business owner could face significant liability.
We at The Bensman Group can help. We are able to offer an insurance policy that protects against liability if customer information is compromised by unauthorized access by computer hackers, your employees or vendors with whom you work. It provides protection against liability in:
Loss of information leading to identity theft.
Loss of information leading to privacy injury.
Infection of the data of others through, for example, spreading a virus via email.
Loss of trade secrets.
It also can cover costs associated with legal requirements to provide notification of a security breach. Of course, some restrictions may apply, depending on the type of business.
