Time for a Furnace Check

After what was in many parts of the country an exceptionally warm and sunny fall, it looks like winter is fast approaching. That means it is time to get your furnace checked and serviced, if you have not already done so.

Getting your furnace serviced by a professional can ensure that you and your family will be safe from malfunctions that can leave you without heat or fill your house with dangerous fumes. It also can save you money by helping your furnace run as efficiently as possible.

And if you want or need to replace your furnace, you still have a few weeks left in the federal tax credit program for energy efficiency. If you buy an energy-efficient furnace by Dec. 31, 2010, you might be eligible for a tax credit of 30 percent of the cost, up to $1,500. Check with your tax adviser for details.
