Beware of Hurricane Harvey Scams

Scenes like those from the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey touch our hearts and often prompt us to open our wallets. Unfortunately, scam artists realize this and prey on the best intentions of people during this and other disasters.

MSN Money suggests that before you donate to an organization claiming to help victims of the hurricane you:

  • Check the Better Business Bureau or sites such as Charity Navigator to find out if a charity is legitimate and how much of the money donated goes to victims rather than to administrative costs.

  • Make sure the website is legitimate. Scam artists often create a site that looks very much like the site of a respected charity, but the URL is just a little different. For example, the real site for the Red Cross is; is fake.

  • Specify that your donation is for the disaster relief. If you donate without saying how you want the money used, the charity can use your donation as it sees fit.

  • Never send cash or checks. If you are donating online, make sure you are at a secure site that starts https://

  • Check your credit card statement for your donation, and make sure it is for the amount you intended.

Finally, most relief experts urge you to donate money rather than goods, unless you live in the area and can distribute goods yourself. Donating money lets the people in the area fill specific needs quickly.
