Arctic Blast Calls for Added Protections

Serious cold has come to much of the country, and it is a good idea to take some precautions to safeguard yourself, your family, your home, your car and your pets.

  • Yourself and your family. Exposed skin can suffer frostbite very quickly in sub-zero temperatures, so bundle up and limit your time outdoors.
  • Your home. Protect against frozen pipes by adding insulation to the pipes and giving them access to the heat from your home. For example, open the doors under your sink so that the warmth can get in. Open a faucet to allow a drip, especially overnight. If your pipes do freeze, call a plumber; don't try to thaw them yourself.
  • Your car. Keep your gas tank at least more than half full, and check your windshield fluid and wipers. Put an emergency kit in your car, and always have a fully charged cell phone.
  • Your pets. Bring your pets indoors or, at the very least, make sure they have a warm, dry place to stay. Limit their time outdoors, and when they come in from a walk, wipe any sidewalk salt or bunched up snow and ice from their feet.
