Heat Your Home Safely in Frigid Weather

The extraordinarily harsh winter is making it hard to stay warm, sometimes even inside your house. But don't risk your safety as you crank up the heat. For example:

  • Use space heaters sparingly, if at all. Use only safety-approved heaters, keep them away from drapes and other flammables, and turn them off when you are not in the room.

  • Make sure that the fresh air intake on your furnace is not covered by snow.

  • Check to make sure your smoke detectors are working.

  • Make sure you have plenty of working carbon monoxide detectors. Faulty furnaces can emit carbon dioxide, which can be deadly. If you have a headache or feel light-headed, disoriented or nauseous, you could be suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning; get outside into the fresh air and call the fire department.
