Winter Storage

When placing a car in storage, you may wish to consider the following tips:

  1. Make sure the gas tank is full to reduce the likelihood of condensation entering the gas tank. Add "Sta-Bil", "Dry Gas" or a similar product to the fuel system and drive the car for a few miles to ensure the product is mixed thoroughly with the gasoline.

  2. Change the antifreeze and run the car for a few minutes to ensure coolant has circulated throughout the system.

  3. Change the oil. Dirty oil contains acids and water that can cause premature bearing failure and rust the engine.

  4. To inhibit rust in the engine area, spray WD-40 to coat all exposed metal surfaces.

  5. Buy some desiccant sacks from a storage supply house. Place a few of them on the floor of the car to keep moisture and humidity from damaging the interior.

  6. Drive the car for at least 30 minutes before storing for the winter. This will evaporate the moisture in the engine and exhaust system.

  7. Wash and wax the entire car. Clean the interior as well. Then, making sure the car is thoroughly dry, cover the car with a cloth car cover to prevent dust from settling onto the paint.
