Keeping Your New Year's Resolutions

The new year is a favorite time for making resolutions. However, many of those resolutions don't last. Some fitness experts recently gave some suggestions for helping you achieve your weight-loss resolutions, but these suggestions also apply to other goals as well:

  • Goals should be SMART: specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and tangible. Don't say, for example, "I want to be more frugal in 2011." Instead, say, "I want to cut my spending by 5 percent a month throughout 2011."
  • Set small goals on the way to your big goal. If you want to stop smoking for good, for example, start by not smoking for a day, then for a week.
  • Come up with a plan of action for achieving your goals. For example, if you want to eat better, get rid of your junk food, make menus and shop for healthy foods.
  • Make sure your goals are achievable. For example, if you want to lose weight, plan to lose a sustainable 1 to 2 pounds a week. Don't expect to lose 5 pounds a week. You won't be able to do it, and you will get discouraged and quit.
