Beware of Drive-By Roofers

Winds and hail that can accompany spring storms often are followed by roofers who drive through affected neighborhoods offering to fix or replace roofs and get the homeowner's insurance company to pay. Before you sign on the dotted line, though, do these things:

  • Make sure the company is reputable. In general, it is best to deal with a local company, because it is easier to check references. Also, if a problem arises later, the company and its workers should still be around.

  • Never let them contact your insurance company on your behalf. As the policyholder, any contact with the insurer should come from you, or from your Personal Lines manager at The Bensman Group.

  • Don't take any action until you have talked with us and we have talked with your insurer. Sometimes, for a variety of reasons, it might not be the right course of action to open a claim. But once you file a claim, your insurer is obligated to take action. Before we contact the insurer on your behalf, we investigate to determine if filing a claim will have an adverse impact on your coverage.
