Be Aware of Tax Scams

It's tax season, and that brings scammers who pretend to be from the IRS and who try to get financial information or money from taxpayers. The scam can take several shapes. For example, some scammers call and say that you owe the IRS back taxes and you could go to jail if you don't give them your bank account information or some other payment. Or they might email and say that if you want your refund immediately, all you have to do is open up an attachment and provide your banking information. The attachment often is malware, and the information could give the scammers access to your bank accounts.

The IRS does not contact taxpayers initially by phone, email or text message, so if you receive an initial contact in any of these ways, you know it is a fraud. Most first contacts from the IRS are in the form of a letter delivered to your mailbox. If the concern is that you have underpaid your taxes, the letter will explain the IRS position and give you the opportunity to respond.

At The Bensman Group, we want to help you avoid scams like these. Feel free to ask if you have any questions about this or about any wealth management or risk management need. You can contact us at 847-572-0828 or
